Superhero cartoon executives will cancel a good show if too many girls are watching

Batman writer Paul Dini gave a nice interview explaining this. If you’re wondering why Young Justice or Green Lantern: The Animated Series or Tower Prep got cancelled, here are the underlying reasons. 

As is semi-well known, if a show doesn’t generate enough toy sales, then it tends to get on the chopping block fast (see Symbionic Titan as another example).

But it’s a bit deeper than that.

Some choice excerpts below.

“They’re all for boys,” Dini said when asked about series cancellations for Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. “I’ve heard executives say this, you know, not [where I am] but at other places, saying like, ‘We do not want girls watching this show.'”

Not unsurprising given that these entertainment executives generally want women to go back to being only obedient housewives. “But wait!” you say. “That’s going too far and a vast overgeneralization!”

Well, it might be a bit overgeneralizing. I mean how sexist can those execs really be, seriou-

‘We need boys, but we need girls right there, right one step behind the boys’ – this is the network talking – ‘one step behind the boys, not as smart as the boys, not as interesting as the boys, but right there.’

So they want girl characters to be dumber and less interesting and inferior in every way.

Oh, how does this all connect to the toy bit I mentioned early on?

When Smith asked why female audiences aren’t being considered, Dini responded: “They. Do. Not. Buy. Toys. The girls buy different toys.”

Man, I really, truly loathe few things. But the entertainment industry’s views on women at large are pretty friggin’ reprehensible.
